Yes, two OtherStuffers in one photo!
Apparently, Offie is the one in the chic yellow hat and Paddleman is in the white t-shirt.
And we are green.
For anyone who hasn't read it, here's Offside's account of canoe racing in Polynesia...not quite as much fun as it looks maybe:)
sheesh! This is a beautiful pic of a beautiful place. It's hard not to feel extremely jealous even from the sanctuary of our crystalline ice palace. Better, to wish both the of the earnest paddlers gentle currents and few sharks!
I wonder if in fact there aren't 3 Others here; is that the elegant finger and limpid eye of Banjo Girl behind the lens?

Of course , it's all an elaborate fraud really, and Offside actually lives in the suburbs of Clermont-Ferrand.

Why are the rowers facing the wrong way? That's no way to win a race.
Also, I believe that strictly speaking what they're doing is not rowing but paddling. Rowing sounds more impressive, though.
Strictly speaking, I don't know. We use the equivalent of 'rowing' in French, 'ramer' and not 'pagayer'.
The guy in the middle, Pita, our trusty Tahitian engine, would probably be better equipped to give us all a proper lecture on the real terminology. Hoe ite va'a!
And no, Filou, Banjo Girl did not take the picture, but she does come rowing with us sometimes.
Ebren, I'm not taking any of that from someone who's just admitted they've put their brain on back to front.
Apparently it's rowing if the oar is in contact with the boat (so the Venitian 'voga' is still rowing even though they stand up and face forwards) and paddling if the oar is only held by the rower... but then there's sculling which can be with one oar or two, sigh, so technical.
Not that you have much need for this vocabulary in Clermont-Ferrand.
But I think I'd naturally say rowing for anything that was taken seriously and paddling for messing about in a kayak.
Skulling with one oar involves putting the oar at the back of a big heavy boat and moving it in a figure of eight motion. With two oars it tends to be a very skinny boat - and means each rower has two oars. Therefore quad-skulls actually have eight oars but are still propelled by skulling.
Offie, I'm not taking stick (bat/club/pole/bat) about being backwards from anyone who lives in a hut on a beach :)
