I expect you've all seen this on YouTube, but it's so great that when Doc posted it I thought I'd put it up on its own... especially as the land is getting pretty dark here in the UK, weather-wise and politics-wise.

Hmm. My favourite of the lot, I think. Very meaningful when your friends are scattered over several continents (and you haven't even met some of them in the flesh).

Thanks, Doctor Zeph.

mimi said...

I enjoyed that. Thank you all.

But Zeph - do you not think that perhaps there are a few sparks of revolutionary fire flickering in the dark of UK politics?

Zephirine said...

I hope so, mimi. It all depresses me, right now.

But then it's cold and I hate being cold. Are you snowed in up in Scotland?

Zephirine said...

Well, England did rather well at the cricket so I feel more cheerful. Government's still crap though.

offside said...

Cricket?

Zephirine said...

In Australia. They're having summer there, apparently. In fact they're having an English-style summer with rain.

mimi said...

I am snowed in - and although envying the Aussies their summer, am enjoying Day One in Adelaide. Three down!!

this is great, quite moving, new to me. I love stopping to watch street muso's, but often end up thinking about the folk who walk by completely oblivious to the magic at their hems.

... and I want Grandpa Elliott (from New Orleans) to perform one of me pomes.

Thanks, Ze Shoot, consider yourselves stood by.

offside said...

Aah, cricket. The Washes, is it?

Zephirine said...

Something like that, Offie :)

Filo, glad you like it. I was only very vaguely aware of PFC till DocShoot linked to the clip. Some of the street musicians around are amazing. There's an oldish West Indian guy who plays the Tube stations at the moment, who sings hymns and religious songs - you know people used to say somebody had a 'sweet voice', well, he really has.

It's good to be stood by, internationally stood by is even better.

Thanks, Zeph, Doc,

Hi Zeph - a quick hello. Hope you are well. Just back in Sydney from Adelaide (bah!) heading back to the snowfields of London in a few days.

here's Geoffrey, enjoy:

Parallax, hi! Mm, yes, Adelaide has a bit of a different significance for English cricket supporters now :)

Thanks for the clip - that song is quite beautiful, he has an amazing voice.

Zephirine said...

Guitou, that is good writing. I liked this:
Middle-aged men gaze at Saville, smiling. This kid is following his dream. He's done what they've never dared to do. When was the last time they've tried something crazy? Hmm… Probably that day, a couple of years ago, when they wore a bright pink tie with light blue and green designs to work.

file said...

yes, para, that's stunning. I read that he's from an island off the coast of Darwin, which might account for the slight Polynesian feeling... or maybe that's just the song, I'll go and find some more!

offside said...

So, things went well in the cricket then? Any good sledging?

offside said...

I apologise for commenting on the cricket. I thought the "game" was won, but now gg tells me that after all that, it's only one-nil. I won't do it again, I promise.

Zephirine said...

Yep, three more matches yet, Offie. But England have really played very well, and got splendid revenge for being slaughtered last time they were in Australia (2006).

offside said...

So, a one-nil battering really does exist after all?

Zephirine said...

Absolutely!

yes, doctor, and you have to wonder at the standards of a country which welcomes and protects mass murderers, torturers, rapists like Thaksin and Pinochet - while rushing to lock up a guy for consensual sex in another country (not that the alleged incidents aren't worthy of attention, just that they pale in comparison). If the hypocrisy wasn't so blatant, it would be funny.

Still, as ever, if you're one of us you'll get away with it, hah!

Meltonian said...

They might not 'pale in comparison' for the women involved.

file said...

I realize you just want to rattle my cage Meltonian, more, say, than you give a fig about the women involved, so excuse me if I don't bother to argue my position in detail just now.

In short however, and assuming the allegations against Assange are in good faith (a bit of a jump there, no?) are you really suggesting the motivations of the UK have anything to do with the women?

Perhaps your position is that dictators and human rights violators whose immediate victims number in the thousands and hundreds of thousands and whose crimes include murder and torture and affect whole countries and cultures for many years - deserve special privileges just because they belong to the big boy's club of billionaires?

I've worked in a professional capacity for women's safety and taught vulnerable women how to reduce their chances of attack and counselled women who've been attacked. But I can't be bothered to give a full answer to some complacent and flippant wag on the internet. But, if you'd like to discuss the issues seriously I could do that, my guess is that you're only up for wanky one liners though... let us see.

is that the thousands of women in Thailand and Chile, or the two in Sweden?

I think the annexing of alleged sexual assaults to make a political point is distasteful.

The possibility that these allegations might actually be true is in danger of being overlooked. Even 'prophets' can be sexual predators (see history, passim).

I don't see how you could know what my feelings are about those women. Sexual assault is widespread in the UK. A lot of people have direct or indirect experience of rape and its consequences.

Anyway, there's not much point in discussion. You've made your position clear over the last few weeks. I'm a worthless cocksucker. Fair enough.

We agree; would you seriously put it past the CIA (given their history) to organize/maximize these allegations for their own political points, wouldn’t that be distasteful?

How many people in the UK have outstanding warrants on them from other countries, do you really think it’s any sort of coincidence that Assange has been targeted for immediate legal action and refused bail, (was Thaksin or Pinochet, despite even more serious claims against them?)? It's just convenient for the UK govt. to execute this one.

Is it honestly beyond you, Melton (name withheld), to annex your points on sexual assault for personal reasons against me (name known)?

The possibility that these allegations might actually be true is in danger of being overlooked. Even 'prophets' can be sexual predators (see history, passim).

We agree; if the allegations are found to be true they define Assange as an extremely ugly criminal. I’m not sure if this is being overlooked, perhaps it is, which, if it is, (again, I agree with you)is deplorable.

However, I’m not overlooking it, but I’m hesitant to convict an individual with a right to be considered innocent before trial Especially when his initiative conflicts with interests of the American/UK govt. (big bastards in general).

However, even if the allegations against Assange are proven to be founded, do they dilute the significance of the Wikileaks disclosures or the urgency of his arrest compared to others?

“Prophet” was not my choice of word and I have not used it, but I do support the Wikileaks initiative, and by extension (to a degree which doesn’t include sexual assault) its mouthpiece.

I don't see how you could know what my feelings are about those women.

Fair enough, except you felt free to cast aspersions on how I might have dismissed the rights of the women involved, no? Is this a free for all, or what?

cont./
Sexual assault is widespread in the UK. A lot of people have direct or indirect experience of rape and its consequences.

If that’s true of you (and/or yours) be assured of my sincere and heartfelt sympathy. It’s not only in the UK.

Anyway, there's not much point in discussion. You've made your position clear over the last few weeks. I'm a worthless cocksucker. Fair enough.

This is not fair.

I assume the “position” you’re referring to you was deduced from the line
“O yes, let us all fallale the alpha male […] rush to make Mish gush”
, that you’ve recalled in public often since it was uttered.

I’ve apologized for that and to you, and you, and no-one else, have seemingly generously publicly forgiven me, and yet clearly not.

The line was Sarcastic and applied generally to a few people, in response to the proposition that Mishari is somehow Superior to you and others on these/those pages, and aimed, primarily at him and those who choose to support the idea that he’s inherently superior to anyone.

I don’t know how you interpreted this personally, Melton. I rattled off a few names after that line, which included, but was not exclusively centred on yours at all. I had recently suffered concussion in a training incident, was drunk and on medication when I wrote it and was referring to stuff that had been rattling around this vacant yoghurt pot for a while unbeknownst to anyone else… it was stoopid, yes, I regretted it, have apologized at least three times for it in public and it certainly wasn’t Meltoncentric in nature…

in fact, of all the newcomers to Zeph’s place/PH crew you are honestly the one I feel for the most - hence this detailed reply. I guess we’re never gonna do brunch, but I’ve always felt that you were the most genuine of the posse you defend most loyally (ask Zeph or Hic who are privy to many of my more private thoughts). I don’t support your rich, destructive and arrogant friends, but they are not you, and I’d only suggest that they may not even be worthy of you/your loyalty amply demonstrated - if you want to talk about “worth”, which I have never doubted your... (despite your suggestion that I have).

I think this is the longest blog post I’ve ever writ M, not pithy perhaps, but honest. Do with it what you will.

Damn, never realised I was missing out on so much action by not reading GU's poetry blogs.

Zephirine said...

Oh, the GU poetry blog's a positive snakepit, Offie, makes the footie blogs look like a boy scout meeting. Seriously. Feuds simmer over there for years, unfortunately it gets hard to keep up with who's involved because so many of them change pseudonyms all the time. I've had to give it up for the sake of my blood pressure.

Gorblimey, File and Melton, I turn my back for a day or so to do some boring drudgy work and... Enough already. Life is too short. Really.

All together now.
(and don't miss the last shot in the video, it's fab)

Filou,
A long time ago when you were a little boy, I always had a hard time to find a babysitter for you since you were restless, nasty, always fighting. Amazing how things have changed over the years. Filou the terrible has become a smooth gentleman. That's too soft son.
Bring me the head of Meltonian or don't ever come back home...you hear.
