Bridge Building for Beginners

How princesses and pirates were press-ganged from plastic
cutlery, paper cups, papier-mâché,
newspaper hats, patches, paint.
The headlines, the cover-ups! How we as kids
recycled wonder from waste.

How our kids still rattle packets, heckle boxes ‘n sniff
‘n sneak, happily peeking illegally
into wrappers under our trees.
The reach of our trees exceeds our long arms! Now our kids
whisper-up worlds in their sleep.

How our kids use books to build houses and bridges
with walls ‘n floors ‘n rooves ‘n all,
‘n angles ‘n arches ‘n eaves.
It’s what pulped wood’s good for! How our kids
build bridges with leaves.

Engineering wonders; how pirates evolve,
as recycled love via bridges, from nerds.
How our kids grow out of ourselves, off our shelves
and into our lives. How the internet lives! How our world
grows out of our words.

Bridging – The Gap

Life under a hard hat, the constant
cacophony of construction, percussive
tools ‘n tool belt, tool box, pick-up truck and
heavy callused hands try to touch softest skin, can’t
sand down thick skin enough
to allow contact.

Tries like a nail gun,

can’t, can’t, can’t.

Of course, you can.

According to Gustave Eiffel and the dentists if there is a gap there is a bridge;in San Francisco people love both,
the Bridge and the Gap.

Very nice poems indeed, these.

I cannot really remember what was back there...
only hope I kept the skills in my toolbox...

a late crissy pressie from me to yous.

sorry late didn't know these were already adjoining us, thanks for putting them up Zeph.

Sorry it took a while, File!

It's very much time for crying. a year since I lost my furs. This has made me visit Patti which is good, but doesn't stop me sobbing a lot cos of no more Tigs and Mouse. I miss them so much.,

very nice indeed. makes me want to hole up and make loads of paper snowflakes, I'm not sure that's a good thing.

file said...

... that could either make or break your reputation, hunni.

guitou said...

Filou,
First I was tempted to try to psycho-analyse it and just found vacuous formula. That's depressing cause you just feel the gap..

file said...

mea culpa Gui, but even the string theory has a few (w)holes in it.

guitou said...

Filou,
I know you didn't take me seriously, you never did and that's depressing too-Also the picture is depressing you can't help imagining a hopscotch with guaranteed free fall, no parachute game...risky business:-)

Zephirine said...

There are no numbers on the hopscotch frame, though, so no sensible child would use it...

file said...

I took you very seriously for a long time, g, and look where it got me :~p

It's hopscotch to oblivion, how else would you get there? Cha-cha to oblivion, limp heavily to oblivion, mince to oblivion...

I think no numbers are included, Zeph, so dyslexic kids don't feel left out.

guitou said...

Zeph,
Numbers were erased by Inspector Clouzot and old friend of File..
"Mince to Oblivion" it's probably one of their code name to signal an alien landing on this hopscotch..Eh bin mince alors.

Inpecteur Clouseau said...

Sorry Jaques , Jaques Clouseau is my name..

file said...

is that Jacques "Sans" Clouseau?

munni said...

Mince to Oblivion would be a good name for a heavy metal band. Only I'm picturing it as mince, the noun, not the verb.

guitou said...

Mince to Oblivion:for a band yes, could be also a nice title for a movie.
I just learned about the word oblivion-I even used it for comments on the gu today before finding the real sense.I guess I fooled myself intp oblivion.Comme d'habitude

file said...

I know a couple of people here who would gladly see Steven Tyler minced (v.) to oblivion, does that count?

guitou, have you thought about entering American Idol?

guitou said...

filou I'm not prepared to disclose on the net all my personal ambitions.ForTyler he looks minced to
oblivion already.

file said...

very wise, papa g.

"Dude looks like a granny!"

file said...

I should clarify: Tyler = Granny, not guitou

this picture circa 882 Vittorio the V king had just minced Conan Schwarzenegger to oblivion.

I am so looking forward to a freedom/democracy poem here and something that reflects courage in sport.
I'm not going to write it, but I feel sure one of you will.

Here's a riff to start: big fat mogul fell off a yacht, daughter finds herself by being a "procuress" whatever that means. Google Maxwell.

Zephirine said...

I think that's called carrying on the family tradition, Mimi.

Sorry for the shortage of posts, folks, I've had a lot of dreary and underpaid work and have been bereaved of a cat. Normal service will be resumed at some point.

file said...

bon courage, Zeph.

pores: life slinks in
softly on paws
inserts a claw and purrs

mimi said...

File: soft and sweet.

The way purry furs are.

guitou said...

did Al Stewart have a bereaved cat?

Gosh - Gui, it's a long time since I heard Al Stewart. That was my sister's tunes.
But it is quite sweet. Not quite right, would guess for Zephy's sadness.

Not sure what is right for this time.

mimi said...

That was me. Didn't mean to be anon

guitou said...

Cheers mimi,
there is always something or someone to remember with a song. I'm sorry about Zeph, I hope i didn't offend her-Didn't intend too.
